Our community was incorporated in 1911 as a Village, with about 350 residents, and on April 1, 2009 became a city "Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, A Michigan City". It lies just north of the City of Detroit and is about one and a half square mile in size. The Shores is the smallest of the five Grosse Pointe communities and the only one to be zoned for single family dwellings only. It is still a small community, currently with approximately 1100 households, about 3000 residents. Grosse Pointe Shores is proud to be the home of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is open to the public and an "American Treasure", and the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, voted the Best Yacht Club in North America again in 2010.

The City of Grosse Pointe Woods was originally incorporated in 1927 and was known as the Village of Lochmoor. In 1939, the Village of Lochmoor became the Village of Grosse Pointe Woods and on December 11, 1950, was incorporated as the City of Grosse Pointe Woods, a Home Rule City. The city covers an area of 3.28 square miles.
The city operates under a Council-Manager form of government established by the City Charter, adopted by voters in 1950. This efficient format divides government into policy-making and administrative functions and has an organizational structure similar to a business.
