Bike routes through the Grosse Pointe community.

The proposed streets for the bike route are currently being evaluated by an engineering company. There are 24 streets, totaling 22.4 miles, with 18 traffic signals and traversing through the cities of Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms and Grosse Pointe Woods. Each street will be evaluated for on street bike trails by documenting existing data such as a lane widths, parking, traffic signals, pavement condition, and by reviewing existing data such as a crash history and SEMCOG data. Once the results are delivered, the route will be brought before each city council for approval.

Grosse Pointe Fishflies Running Club
We run like there’s no tomorrow!
ã Grosse Pointe Fishflies 2011

Who we are…
The Grosse Pointe Fishflies (“GP Fishflies”) is a volunteer led, free, running club founded in April 2010 at Mason Elementary School for K-5th grade students who want to be active. The pilot program proved to be an overwhelming success with 66 students registered for our first session. The club now has over 360 students participating at 6 elementary schools in the Grosse Pointe community; Mason, Poupard, Ferry, Maire, Defer and Richard. With 3 other elementary schools interested in possibly rolling out the program next Spring.

What we offer…
We provide an encouraging environment for students of all skill levels to learn and grow as runners. We help them set attainable goals, develop good sportsmanship skills, and understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle through our “topic of the day” discussion.   Our meetings alternate between distance training and drill stations - which focus on endurance, speed, and agility training.

Our goals…
Our goals are to get kids excited about running at an early age and teach them how running relates to good health as well as other sports. Currently, the club is working towards the goal of participating in a local 5K as a team. Also, GP Fishflies holds an annual district-wide meet for the participating schools to expose the students to competition as an individual as well as a team.

What the schools will need to do…
Each school looking to participate would need to find volunteers to run the program – 1 volunteer per 8-10 students. All volunteers would need to have a completed GP Schools Volunteer form on file with the school district.

School support from the GP Fishflies administration…
The GP Fishflies administration would offer a district-wide orientation and handbooks outlining the club’s program for each of the volunteers. Each school would handle their own fall and spring sessions, within the GP Fishflies guidelines, with the GP Fishflies administration overseeing each group as part of a whole.

What the students need to do…
Students should come to each meeting prepared with running shoes, layered clothing, water bottle, snack (if meeting after school), and most importantly – a positive attitude.

Our vision for the GP Fishflies future….
Ultimately we would like to have all elementary schools within the Grosse Pointe Community participating in the GP Fishflies. We want to continue to impact kids at a young age in regards to a healthy, active lifestyle and watch them grow as runners and make running a life-time sport either competitively or for personal enjoyment.
