Families Against Narcotics
Founded in 2007, Families Against Narcotics (FAN) is a grassroots organization based in Macomb County, Michigan. We held our first town hall meeting in the basement of a church and continued to meet in that same location for 14 years. FAN’s monthly “Forums” have grown, but they continue to be a safe place where people can face and learn about addiction from others who have had similar experiences. Thousands have attended our meetings, including families affected by addiction; concerned citizens; law enforcement; judges; health care professionals; leaders in education, business, and religion; and people in recovery. We work tirelessly to educate young adults, parents, school personnel, law enforcement, judges, doctors, and other health care professionals about the dangers of misusing prescription drugs, especially painkillers. FAN has grown to more than 20 chapters throughout Michigan and offers dozens of monthly support meetings across the state.

Grosse Pointe Community Chorus The GP Community Chorus is a 70-member adult chorus that has been in continuous existence since 1953. Chorus members come from across the tri-county area to rehearse each Tuesday night during our two concert seasons. Auditions are not required. All you need is a joy of singing. This club is involved in projects locally and internationally. One of their projects involves presenting scholarships to students from several high schools in the area. They have just helped them start a small library for the program. Their major fundraiser is the Grosse Pointe Run. Good Scares for Good Causes Haunted Garage Productions (HGP) is the creation of Mr. Glen Williams, an elementary school educator and gym teacher in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools for over 32 years. Now retired, Glen began what would later become the Haunted Garage as a series of charitable Halloween parties and tours, allowing folks to enjoy his ever-expanding, must-see collection of “things that go bump in the night” and contribute funds for worthwhile local causes in the process. Glen has been an avid Halloween collector and prop builder for almost 40 years, having loved the holiday since he was a boy, (though due to his height, he was ironically judged “too tall” to go trick-or-treating in his neighborhood — even as a pre-teen!) The New Jumps Arrives In the summer of 2009, Chef Chad Stewart took the already successful formula for his fresh cuisine restaurant and expounded upon it by adding a brand new stylish setting in a new location, obtaining a full liquor license, and offering a totally reinvented dinner menu. Through these changes, Jumps has evolved into something even more remarkable. “We are still serving all three meals and we still have our roots in honest, fresh American cuisine, but we’re also able to stretch out,” says Stewart. “Our clientele will still find Jumps favorites from the past, but now they appear alongside new menu specialties like braised beef short ribs, sautéed perch a la meuniere, and angel hair pasta with lobster meat and grilled scallops.”

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 19, 2014, the Mary Ellen Stempfle University Center opened its second building—the Center for Distance Learning—on the same campus site as its University Center (located at 19191 Verner Road in Harper Woods, Michigan). In the fall of 2015, the building was renamed and became the Center for Learning Technology. The Center provides innovative approaches to using technology for teaching, professional development and community engagement. The Center offers virtual classrooms and videoconferencing, a digital repository, video/audio production, webinars, and technology-enhanced meeting space for faculty, staff, business and community members.
